He is 1.9 meters tall. He was born on December 16, 1997, in Roanoke, Virginia, in the United States of America to Carlos Basham Sr. and Crystal Basham.

He went to Northside in Roanoke, Virginia. As a senior, he had 76 tackles and had seven sacks. He committed to playing college football at Wake Forest University after graduating from high school. He played collegiate football for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons team at Wake Forest University.

After redshirting his freshman year at Wake Forest in 2016, he participated in all 13 games and made 24 tackles in 2017. As a junior in 2018, he recorded 64 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He returned to Wake Forest in 2019 and was a starter. On December 21, 2019, he announced that he would return to college in 2020 for his last year. Basham was chosen by the Buffalo Bills with the 61st overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. On May 12, 2021, Basham formally committed to the Bills.
