Woodruff attended Wheeler High School in Wheeler, Mississippi, and was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers. He did not sign with the Rangers and instead played college baseball at Mississippi State University.

Woodruff made his professional debut with the Helena Brewers that year, where he spent the entire season, going 1-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 14 games (eight starts).

He began 2016 with the Brevard County Manatees, where he posted a 4-7 record and 3.45 ERA in 21 games (19 starts). He was promoted to the Biloxi Shuckers in May.

Woodruff began his 2017 season with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. On June 13, the Brewers promoted Woodruff to the major leagues.
However, while warming up, he injured himself and was placed on the disabled list. Woodruff was recalled by the Brewers and will make his debut on August 4.

MLB  ranked Woodruff as Milwaukee’s best prospect going into the 2018 season. He started the 2018 season with the Milwaukee Brewers but was transferred to Colorado Springs in early April.
