He attended Ouachita Parish High School, where he participated in football during his senior year. After graduating from high school, the four-star prospect made a commitment to play college football for the University of Alabama.

He played football for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2014 to 2017, first as a reserve and then as a starter in his junior and senior seasons. Sims was not selected by any team in the 2018 NFL Draft, therefore he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Redskins in May of that year.
