After playing in his first year, he made the move to cornerback permanently. In his final year as a Vanderbilt Commodore, he equaled the career high for interceptions (15). He also made 62 tackles and had seven interceptions, which was the third-highest total by a Vanderbilt player in a single season. He was named an All-American during the middle of the season by Sports Illustrated.

When the Walter Camp Foundation named him to the second team at the end of the season, he became the first Vanderbilt All-American in four years. The Green Bay Packers selected Hayward in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. In March 2016, he agreed to a three-year contract with the San Diego Chargers.
