At Burnsville High School, where he played football, he finished his senior year with 60 tackles, four sacks, and eight tackles for loss. He was a defensive lineman. He attended the University of Wyoming after high school and played collegiate football there for the Wyoming Cowboys squad. He participated in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2013 after redshirting his true freshman year in 2012.
