In the 2010 amateur draft, he was selected as the first baseman. Tim McDonnell, a scout, placed him with the Florida Marlins in the 23rd spot overall.

He started his professional career in 2010 and was later converted to the outfield after signing with the Marlins (for a $1.7 million bonus).

In his professional debut, he went 3 for 3 with a triple, two runs, and two RBI to demonstrate right away that he belonged.

That summer, he played sparingly with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (8 for 23, 2 2B, BB) and GCL Marlins (9 for 24, 2B, 3B, 2 BB, SB).

He performed admirably for Greensboro in a full-season league as a teenager in 2011, hitting .312/.388/.484 with 32 doubles, 15 home runs, 73 runs, 77 RBI, and 32 steals in 37 attempts.

After Brady Shoemaker and Andrew Clark, he finished among the top players in the South Atlantic League in terms of average, OBP, OPS, hits (144, tied for third with Noah Perio), doubles (tied for ninth), and thefts (tied for 6th).

In the conference championship, he contributed to Greensboro’s victory. He blasted a two-run walk-off home run off Jose Monegro in the bottom of the 15th inning of game one.

Together with Kyle Parker and Brandon Jacobs, he was selected to the SAL All-Star outfield. Behind Bryce Harper, Machado, Jurickson Profar, and Jameson Taillon, Baseball America ranked him as the top prospect in the SAL, the top prospect for the Marlins, and the #41 prospect overall in the minors.

The Marlins Minor League Player of the Year honor went to him.
