Rush attended Lansing Catholic High School, a small private school in Lansing, Michigan (with an enrolment of a little over 500 pupils), and started at quarterback for three years. In addition, he was a baseball and basketball player until his freshman year.

He guided his team to back-to-back perfect regular seasons in 2010 and 2011, both of which they won all of their games.

With his leadership, his team finished second in the state championships in 2011. During the game for the Division 5 regional final versus Dowagiac Union High School, he broke a new mark for the state of Michigan by throwing five touchdown passes in one quarter and eight touchdown passes overall.

Despite accumulating 300 passing yards and three touchdowns through the course of the championship game against Powers Catholic High School, the squad would ultimately come up short and lose the game 26–56.

He was named All-State, Michigan Division 5/6 Player of the Year by the Associated Press and Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year by ESPN as a senior.
