Malone is a native of Ellenwood, Georgia, and was educated at Martin Luther King Jr. High School before transferring to Cedar Grove High School.

After high school, Malone attended Western Kentucky University where he was part of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers football team.

Malone started for Western Kentucky as a freshman and had 25 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 5 quarterback hurries.

After finishing the season with 60 tackles, nine tackles for loss, six sacks, eight quarterback hurries, and two forced fumbles, he was named honorable mention All-Conference USA as a sophomore. 

In 2020, Malone debated going pro in the NFL Draft but finally opted to stay for his senior year. Malone was one of the top five outside linebacker prospects for the 2021 NFL draft and the preseason Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.

He was also on the watchlists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
