LeMahieu committed to play college baseball for the LSU Tigers. He started 67 of LSU’s 68 games as a freshman in 2008, hitting.337 overall, and guiding the Tigers to their first NCAA postseason appearance since 2005.

After hitting .300 and driving in seven runs in the Baton Rouge regional, he was named to the All-Tournament team.
