While a student at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Swanson participated in baseball for the team there. After high school, he went to Wabash Valley College and Iowa Western Community College, where he played baseball in college. The Texas Rangers selected Swanson in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

He began his professional career in 2014 with the Spokane Indians. He participated in 2015 with the Arizona League Rangers, Round Rock Express, Frisco RoughRiders, and Hickory Crawdads. The Rangers dealt him to the New York Yankees in August 2016. The Yankees assigned him to the Charleston RiverDogs that year.
