Ernie James Clement is an American professional baseball utility player who currently plays for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball. He was born on March 22, 1996, in Cleveland, Ohio.
He made his MLB debut in 2021. After going unselected in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft straight out of high school, he enrolled at the University of Virginia and played collegiate baseball there.
He finished the 2015 College World Series with a batting average of.292 and was chosen to the All-CWS Team. As a result of his performance, Virginia won their first-ever national championship.
In 2017, as a sophomore at Virginia, he had a batting line of.351/.383/.443 with one home run and thirty runs batted in. The Cleveland Indians picked Clement in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB draft. In 2017,
he made his professional debut with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York–Penn League’s Class A Short Season. Owing to the termination of the minor league season due to the COVID-19 epidemic,
Clement did not play any minor league games in 2019. He was called up to the major leagues on May 30, 2021, as the Indians’ 27th player on the 40-man roster for the second game of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In his first major league plate appearance, he struck out against the Seattle Mariners.
