Renfroe attended Mississippi State University on a baseball scholarship and played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Renfroe was drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Padres.

He was selected Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on April 15, 2013.

He was also chosen to the Golden Spikes Award shortlist and won the C Spire Ferriss Trophy in 2013, which is given to Mississippi’s greatest college baseball player.

Renfroe was a member of the Bethesda Big Train of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, he set the Big Train record for most runs, home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage, and total bases in a season.
