Despite receiving offers from Oregon, Stanford, and Southern California, he decided to attend Oregon State University.

He participated in college football with the Oregon State Beavers at Oregon State. He started at center for Oregon State in his first season, becoming the first true freshman to do so since Roger Levasa in 1978.
