The Patriots quickly added four players, including Mills, to take advantage of the lower salary cap of $182.5 million (down significantly from last year’s $198.2 million) and avoid having to cut veterans or renegotiate contracts.

The cornerback position was where the 28-year-old LSU graduate played for the Eagles throughout his first four seasons with the team.

He made the transition to safety well in advance of the 2020 season and played in 15 games, recording a career-high 74 tackles, three pass breakups, 1.5 sacks, and one interception.

In 2017, he had his greatest statistical season in Philadelphia, with 64 tackles, 14 pass deflections, and three interceptions. During the run to Super Bowl LII victory, he had 13 tackles and 5 pass deflections.

It’s obvious that New England’s top priority right now is strengthening its defense.
