In the National Football League, John Bates plays tight end for the Washington Commanders. He is 117 kg in weight and 1.98 m tall. Nyssa High School was his initial high school; however, he eventually transferred to Lebanon High School, where he played football. In addition to being chosen All-MWVC as a wide receiver, defensive back, and punter in 2014 and 2015, he was named All-Legislative three times as a senior.

During his time at Boise State University, he participated in collegiate football for the team known as the Boise State Broncos. He redshirted his true freshman year in 2016 and played in all 14 games as a redshirt freshman in 2017, starting two games and catching three catches for 34 yards.

In 2018, he was a redshirt sophomore who started nine of the 13 games he participated in. He was also named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. Before the season was out, he had 10 receptions for 155 yards and a score. He tied his career high with five catches in his five games as a redshirt senior in 2020, starting four of them.

In a game in December 2021, he caught a pass from Kyle Allen and scored his first NFL touchdown on it after fumbling the pass. He later recovered the throw, which he had initially fumbled.
