The Washington Commanders of the National Football League had defensive lineman John Ridgeway on their team. He is 146 kg in weight and 1.96 m tall. He played both offensive line and defensive back in football at Bloomington High School. As a senior, he was chosen for both the offense and defense first teams of the Big Twelve Conference.

He played collegiate football for the Illinois State Redbirds while wearing a redshirt as a true freshman at Illinois State University. He was chosen for the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) All-Newcomer team as a result of his 30 tackles as a redshirt freshman. During his redshirt junior season, he produced 22 tackles, including three for a loss, and was selected to the MVFC first team.

After the season was over, he officially declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. The Dallas Cowboys selected Ridgeway with the 178th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. On September 17, 2022, he was released. The Washington Commanders claimed him off waivers on September 19, 2022.
