He played cornerback and wide receiver for the football team at Cleveland’s Benedictine High School. He made a commitment to play college football at Michigan State University after graduating from high school.
He participated in football for the Michigan State Spartans at Michigan State. Prior to the fifth game of the season, he was switched from wide receiver to cornerback as he began his freshman season in 2016. He participated in 34 games throughout the course of his career, recording 130 tackles, three interceptions, 0.5 sacks, and one score.
He signed up for the NFL Draft in 2019 after his junior year. In the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Layne with the 83rd overall pick. In the 10 games he played in 2019 he only made three tackles. He was added to the reserve list and COVID-19 list by the Steelers on July 29, 2020.
On August 11th, 2020, he started functioning. He participated in all 16 of the Steelers’ contests and made 22 tackles last season. He was let go by the Steelers on August 30, 2022. On August 31, 2022, the New York Giants claimed him off waivers.
