Calhoun went to Buckeye Union High School, which is located in Buckeye, Arizona. Calhoun and Sammy Solis were selected Co-Players of the Year for West Valley High School Baseball in 2005.



Calhoun went on to play baseball in college for Yavapai College and Arizona State University.

He batted .321 in 61 games for the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2010, his senior year, with 17 home runs and 59 runs batted in (RBIs).

Calhoun was drafted in the eighth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

He was assigned to Rookie League Orem, where he hit.292 with seven home runs and 42 RBI in 56 games. He hit .324 with 22 home runs, 99 RBI, and a .957 OPS in 133 games with High-A Inland Empire in 2011.

He also had 20 stolen bases. As a utility player, he was chosen to the California League Postseason All-Star squad. In 2011, he was named the Kenny Myers Minor League Player of the Year.

For the 2012 season, he received a direct promotion to Triple-A Salt Lake. Prior to his first callup, he hit .296 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 43 games.
