Lawrence Guy

The Patriots have already started to pay defensive lineman Lawrence Guy. Salary cap specialist Miguel Benzan claims that as of the third day of the 2022 league year, Guy is guaranteed $1 million.

In March of last year, Guy inked a contract with the Patriots that would pay him $2 million as his base salary for the upcoming season. The first 50% of it is already in the bank.

While Guy’s $4.5 million salary cap number would not change if he earned the guarantee, the cap savings that may have been realized in the event of his release would be reduced.

The Patriots would have to pay $1.75 million in dead cap charges (i.e., money that would remain on the books even if a player is cut) instead of just $750,000, resulting in a net savings of about $1.9 million.

In the event that Guy is traded, however, New England would not be liable for the guarantee. His whole pay, including the guaranteed part, would be assumed by the acquiring team.

The 32 years old, will be playing for the Patriots for the sixth year in a row. Originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft, he became a free agency in 2017 and signed with the New England Patriots.

Guy contributed right on and has been a key cog in the Patriots’ defensive line ever since, playing in a total of 87 games (regular season + postseason) and contributing to the team’s Super Bowl LIII victory.
