The Lynchburg, Virginia, native was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round (120th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft and signed a four-year rookie contract with the team. Thomas was rated as a 4-star recruit by many sports agencies. As a sought-after player, he had many offers from great institutions, but he chose Virginia Tech instead.

He enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2009 and played for the Virginia Tech Hokies for five seasons.

Thomas redshirted in 2009 and then spent 2010 as Tyrod Taylor’s backup, starting seven games.
