Vierling was born on September 16th, 1996, in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was a Kansas Jayhawks football player. His younger brother Mark was likewise a baseball fanatic.



While attending Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, the two played varsity baseball together in 2015, when Matt was the team’s Class 5 Missouri state champion.

Matt, a senior outfielder, was moved to shortstop so that he could be closer to his brother, who was playing second base.

Vierling had the most hits and most RBIs for the Christian Brothers in the season of 2013. As a pitcher, he went 8-0 with a 2.07 ERA (ERA).

The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 30th round of the 2015 MLB draft, but he chose to stay with the Fighting Irish.

Vierling played three seasons of collegiate baseball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With seven home runs and 42 RBIs, he was voted third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference as a sophomore (ACC).
