Wieland had an exciting college career before being signed as a rookie free agent by the Patriots.
He committed to play linebacker at Iowa after participating in all three aspects of the game while in high school, but he had to sit out the 2017 season due to a ruptured quad.
Wieland transferred to Iowa Western Community College rather than playing a single game with the Hawkeyes. He transferred once more, this time to Grand View, two years later.
Wieland made the decision to turn professional after a comparatively successful two-year NAIA career. However, he was not selected in the 2022 draft and had to sign a free-agent contract.
He was not signed until the beginning of August following a fruitless rookie minicamp tryout in New England. Wieland did in fact sign with the Patriots at that time.

Wieland is not yet recorded against New England’s books because the deal does not meet the criteria for Top-51 status.
