Oscar Mauricio Mercado is a Colombian-American professional baseball outfielder who currently plays for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball.

Mercado was born on December 16, 1994, in Cartagena, Colombia. During the 2017 World Baseball Classic, he competed for the Colombian national baseball team in the tournament.



Mercado was born in the Colombian city of Cartagena. Oscar Sr., the man who raised him, was an avid soccer player who also worked as a general contractor. Juan, his older brother, and Nathalia, his identical twin sister, are his siblings.

When he was seven years old, his family relocated to Tampa, Florida, after immigrating to the United States in order to take advantage of his father’s work visa.

Mercado received their secondary education at the Gaither High School located in Tampa, Florida. He made a verbal commitment to play baseball for the collegiate team at Florida State University.

The St. Louis Cardinals picked Mercado in the second round of the 2013 MLB draft, with the 58th overall pick.  He received a $1.5 million signing bonus from the Cardinals.

The Cardinals traded Mercado to the Cleveland Indians on July 31, 2018, in exchange for Conner Capel and John Torres. He was sent to the Class AAA International League’s Columbus Clippers, where he concluded the season.
