Phil Maton began his professional career in 2015 when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 20th round of the 2015 MLB draft. He spent that season with the Short Season-A Tri-City Dust Devils.

The Padres made him play for the Class-A Fort Wayne TinCaps, Advanced-A Lake Elsinore Storm and Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas in the 2016 season. The following season was spent with only the Triple-A El Paso. He made his MLB debut on June 11, 2017, for the Padres.

He was with Triple-A El Paso throughout the 2018 season. The Cleveland Indians purchased his contract from the Padres in July 2019. In July 2021, the Indians traded him to the Houston Astros.
