He was born on December 14, 1993, in Dayton, Ohio in the USA. His parents are Joe Ward and Samantha Ward. He played baseball for his high school at Shadow Hills High School in Indio, California. After high school, he enrolled at Fresno State University where he played college baseball for the baseball team.

Taylor also played collegiate summer baseball with the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League before he graduated from college. In 2015, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 1st round of the 2015 MLB draft. He signed with them and made his professional debut that year with the Orem Owlz.

He was promoted during the season to play with the Burlington Bees where he was named a Pioneer League Mid-Season All-Star. He played with the Inland Empire 66ers in the 2016 minor league season and was named an Arizona Fall League 2016 Rising Star, and a MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star.

Taylor played the 2017 season with both the 66ers and the Mobile BayBears. That year, he was named again as the MiLB.com Angels Organization All-Star. He made his MLB debut on August 14, 2018.
