Willie Rafael Castro Capellan is a professional baseball shortstop from Puerto Rico who plays for the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball (MLB).



Castro became an international free agent with the Indians in July 2013.  He debuted in 2014 with the Arizona League Indians, batting.239 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 43 games.



He batted.264 with one home run, 25 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 2015, and.258 with the Lake County Captains and Lynchburg Hillcats in 2016.

In 2017, Castro hit.290 with 11 home runs, 58 RBIs, 19 stolen bases, and a.761 OPS for Lynchburg.  The Indians signed him after the season.  In 2018, Castro was listed as Cleveland’s fifth-best prospect by MLB.com.

Leonys Martin and Kyle Dowdy were dealt with in Detroit on July 31, 2018, in exchange for Castro. When the Detroit Tigers picked Castro’s contract on August 24, 2019, he was promoted to the majors.

On September 22, he hit his first big league home run against Josh Osich of the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

After the deal, he played for the Erie SeaWolves and the Toledo Mud Hens. He returned to Toledo in 2019.

In his final 30 games, he batted only.230, with just one home run to show for his efforts this year.
