Adames, Drew Smyly, and Nick Franklin were traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, 2014, while Austin Jackson was traded to the Seattle Mariners and David Price was traded to the Detroit Tigers.

He was assigned to the Bowling Green Hot Rods by the Rays, and he spent the rest of the season with them.

He batted .271 with eight home runs and 61 RBIs in 125 games between West Michigan and Bowling Green.

In 2015, he batted .258 with four home runs and 46 RBIs for the Charlotte Stone Crabs, and in 2016, he batted .274 with 11 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 31 doubles for the Montgomery Biscuits.

Adames spent 2017 with the Durham Bulls, batting .277 with 10 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a .776 OPS.

On May 22, 2018, Adames was promoted to the Rays and made his major league debut the same day. That same night, he collected his first hit, a solo home run against Chris Sale.

Due to the middle infield bottleneck including Wendle, Adeiny Hechavarria, Daniel Robertson, and Matt Duffy, Adames was sent back down to Durham on July 12 in order to gain more consistent playing time.

In his second tenure, Adames hit .226 with a .606 OPS.  On July 22, Adames was recalled for the third time.
