The seven runs batted in were a franchise record. On September 24th, he had hit his first career home run, a single blast off of San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner.

In a 6-5 victory over the Dodgers on September 28th, he became the first player to hit a ball onto the roof of the brick warehouse in the left-field corner of Petco Park.

He concluded the season with a.371 batting average, four home runs, and 14 RBIs in 11 games.

Renfroe’s strong finish to 2016 earned him a spot in the Padres’ starting lineup in 2017, where he played right field out of the gate and batted well throughout spring training.

Despite going through a major youth movement, the San Diego Padres couldn’t compete in the strong National League West, instead battling it out with the San Francisco Giants to avoid finishing last.

Still, Hunter had a solid season while playing largely unnoticed. With three homers in a 13-7 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on September 20th, he broke a team record for homers in a season with 181 and helped the Padres break the Major League mark for long balls hit that year.
