Williams studied at Christian Brothers College High School until the second year of his sophomore year, when he switched to Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Missouri.

In the second round of the 2013 MLB draft, the Milwaukee Brewers picked him with the 54th overall pick. Instead of enrolling at the University of Missouri, he chose to sign with the Brewers for a $1.35 million signing bonus.



Williams tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow during spring training in 2017. He missed the full season due to Tommy John surgery.

He was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game for the Brewers in 2019.

The Brewers picked Williams’ contract and promoted him to the major leagues on August 5, 2019. On August 7, he made his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Williams has a 3.95 earned run average (ERA) in 13 appearances with the 2019 Brewers, striking out 14 batters in 13+23 innings pitched.

In September 2020, Williams was named the National League Reliever of the Month. He only allowed four hits, no runs, and 24 strikeouts over 13 innings.

Williams was awarded MLB Reliever of the Year on October 5, 2020, after receiving 12 of 17 votes. Williams had a breakout year, with a 0.33 ERA while allowing only 18 hits in 27 innings and striking out 53 batters.
