He was rated as one of the best talents in his class and a five-star recruit overall. He was a member of the Auburn University Tigers’ intercollegiate football team. He recorded 20 tackles and four sacks as a true freshman in 2013. He only participated in seven games as a junior in 2015 due to injuries, but he still managed to make 17 tackles and one sack.

Lawson was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He participated in all 16 contests, made one start, and finished with a total of 16 tackles and 8.5 sacks. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team thanks to his 8.5 sacks, which put him second on the team and first among rookies behind Geno Atkins’ 9.0.
