He excelled as a safety and receiver for Jeff Humble, the head coach of William Penn Charter School. In his junior and senior years, he was a starter wide receiver. In his senior year, he was selected as a defensive back for the first team.

He was chosen for the All-Southeastern Pennsylvania First Team while playing defensive back for the football team. He was twice chosen for the Penn Inter-Ac League First Team. He attended at West Virginia University after completing high school, where he played for the Mountaineers from 2013 to 2015.

He started five of his 11 games as a true freshman. Due to his outstanding play as a junior, when he led the nation in pass breakups and interceptions, he was selected to the Big 12 first team. He recorded 49 tackles and two lost fumbles throughout the entire season. He decided against playing in his final season of eligibility and instead chose to join the NFL.
