The oldest significant professional sports league in the world is Major League Baseball (MLB), a professional baseball league. As of 2022, 30 teams, 15 in the National League (NL) and 15 in the American League (AL) play in Major League Baseball, with 29 based in the United States and 1 in Canada.
In 1876 and 1901, respectively, the NL and AL were established. The National Agreement was signed by the two leagues in 1903, and they collaborated but were still considered separate organizations under the law until 2000 when they combined to form the Baseball Commissioner’s Organization.
In Midtown Manhattan, there is an MLB headquarters. Each team plays 162 games in a season, and six teams from each league progress to the World Series, a best-of-seven championship match between the two league champions that have been played since 1903.
In North America and several other nations, baseball games are broadcast on television, radio, and the internet. With more than 69.6 million fans in 2018, MLB has the largest total season attendance of any sports league in the world.
