Last January, Hand agreed to a one-year, $10.5 million agreement with Washington. However, he was traded to Toronto after only 41 games.

With the Nationals, Hand struggled to establish his feet. He had a 3.59 ERA with the team, but he struggled to find the strike zone on numerous occasions, blowing five save opportunities during his time there.

In July, he was traded to Toronto as part of a deadline fire sale for catcher Riley Adams, who had shown promise for Washington. In just 35 at-bats for the Nats last season, Adams batted.268 with 19 hits and a.887 OPS.

In the meantime, Toronto designated Hand for assignment after he posted a 7.27 ERA in 11 appearances up north. He was later purchased by the New York Mets, where he pitched 13.1 innings with a 2.70 ERA.

Hand will now join his fourth team in less than a year. Hand will be hoping to improve Philadelphia’s late-game pitching, which struggled last season, with the team posting the league’s sixth-worst bullpen ERA, according to Covers.com.
