He began the 2016 season with the Lakeland Flying Tigers before being promoted to the Erie SeaWolves midway through the year.

Between the two organizations, he threw to an 8–8 record, 2.44 ERA, and 1.05 WHIP in 25 games (24 starts).

In 2017, he went 8–9 with a 5.07 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 27 games (26 starts) for Erie, and in 2018, he went 6–8 with a 4.44 ERA in 26 games for both Erie and the Toledo Mud Hens.

Alexander was back in Toledo for the start of the 2019 season.

Alexander’s contract was selected by the Tigers on July 3, 2019, and he was promoted to the major leagues as the 26th man in a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox.

He pitched five innings in his major league debut, giving two runs and striking out four batters (including the very first batter he faced).

Alexander earned his first major league win on September 16 against the Baltimore Orioles, pitching six innings of one-run baseball.

Alexander set an MLB record for a reliever on August 2, 2020, when he struck out nine straight batters against the Cincinnati Reds.

He also matched Doug Fister’s American League and Tigers franchise record of nine straight strikeouts set on September 27, 2012.

Since Randy Johnson established the strikeout record for a relief pitcher with 16 on July 18, 2001, he became the first pitcher with 10 or more strikeouts in a relief appearance.

(Johnson’s record was set on the second day of a suspended game; despite being the first pitcher to pitch that day, he was credited as a relief.)
