In exchange for OF Leonys Martin and RHP Kyle Dowdy, the Detroit Tigers acquired SS Willi Castro from the Cleveland Indians.

Castro was originally signed by the Indians in 2013 and is ranked as the No. 8 prospect in Cleveland by MLB Pipeline.



The switch-hitter has a .245 (91×371) batting average with five home runs, 20 doubles, two triples, and 39 RBI through 97 games with Double-A Akron this season. Earlier this season, Castro was selected as an Eastern League All-Star.

The Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico native had a.263 (472×1795) batting average in five seasons with the Indians, with 26 home runs, 182 RBI, 79 doubles, and 19 triples.

Castro was nominated to the 2017 Carolina League All-Star Team after leading Single A Lynchburg to second place in the league with 136 hits and career highs of 11 home runs, 58 RBI, and 69 runs scored.

Castro was named an Indians organization All-Star by MiLB.com.

Castro reported to the Tigers’ satellite training camp in Toledo to begin the 2020 season. On August 13, 2020, he was recalled to the big league club.  Castro hit .349 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 129 at-bats during the 2020 season.

Castro qualified to the Tigers’ 2021 squad out of spring training and played in his first major – opening day game. After some defensive issues at shortstop, manager A. J. Hinch started playing Castro more at second base.

Castro was demoted to AAA Toledo by the Tigers on July 16. Castro had a .214 batting average and 6 home runs through the All-Star break, with a minus-10 Defensive Runs Saved rating at second base.

On July 22, Castro was called up to the major league roster to replace Isaac Paredes, who was injured. In 125 games in 2021, he hit .220/.273/.351 with nine home runs, 38 RBIs, and nine stolen bases.
