Smith went to McAdory High School in McCalla, Alabama, where he completed his high school career. He began playing baseball at Wallace State Community College, where he attended for two years.
The Cleveland Indians picked him in the 23rd round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He transferred to the University of Mississippi and played college baseball for the Ole Miss Rebels after deciding not to sign with Cleveland.
The Miami Marlins picked Smith in the eleventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft, and Smith eventually signed with the Marlins. Smith was exchanged by the Marlins for Jess Tinoco by the Rockies on August 13, 2020.
The Rockies promoted Smith to the major leagues on May 28, 2022. He made his big league debut on May 29 and his family which included his parents and his wife flew over to watch and cheer him.
Smith is the eighth Wallace State player overall to make it to the majors under coach Randy Putman and the first since Zelous Wheeler in 2014.
