Overton was raised in the Mechanicsville neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia, where he was born. He went to Atlee High School, where he mainly played shortstop and was a relief pitcher.

At Old Dominion, Overton played college baseball. The Miami Marlins selected Overton in the fifteenth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. With the Low-A Batavia Muckdogs, Overton made his professional debut, throwing to a 4.71 ERA in 17 appearances.

Overton signed into a minor league agreement with the Washington Nationals organization on July 17, 2015. With a 3.72 ERA in 12 games, he split the rest of the season with the Low-A Auburn Doubledays.

On April 13, 2016, Overton signed a contract with the independent Sioux City Explorers of the American Association of Professional Baseball. Overton and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a minor league contract on August 11, 2016.

Overton and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a minor league deal on November 17, 2021, after he has previously played for the Lancaster Barnstormers, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
