The Dallas Cowboys made the decision to sign Rush as an undrafted free agent after the 2017 National Football League Draft. He went on to play four seasons with the Cowboys.

After starting quarterback Dak Prescott suffered an ankle injury that ended his season on October 31, 2020, the Dallas Cowboys decided they needed additional depth at the quarterback position and added Rush to their practice squad.

It wasn’t until Week 2 of the season, against the Cincinnati Bengals, that he got his first start of the year. In that game, they won 20–17, and he threw for 235 yards and a score.
