He graduated from Elder High School, where he played football. He participated as a sophomore in the football team’s OHSAA State Championship victory. As a senior tight end, he caught 10 passes for a total of 125 yards.

After leaving high school, he signed as a walk-on with the Ohio State Buckeyes to start his college football career. He rotated at long snapper over the first seven games as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, he won the right to serve as the team’s long snapper for punts and place kicks.
