He graduated from Elder High School, where he played football. He participated as a sophomore in the football team’s OHSAA State Championship victory. As a senior tight end, he caught 10 passes for a total of 125 yards.

He participated in three victories for the Big Ten Conference (2007, 2008 and 2009). After the 2011 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams signed undrafted free agent McQuaide. He reconnected with special teams coordinator John Fassel, who was his coach with the Rams, when he signed with the Dallas Cowboys in March 2021.
McQuaide re-signed with Dallas on a one-year deal in March 2022. He was put on the injured reserve list after his final snap in the fourth game against the Washington Commanders resulted in a torn left triceps.
