While attending Dutchtown High School, he was a football and track star. An All-American in football, he played defensive back. He enrolled at the University of Alabama after finishing high school, where he played NCAA football for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Week 7 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars took place in the same month, and he was elevated off the practice squad.
