Dawson attended Licking Heights High School in Pataskala, Ohio, where he played football and baseball. He concentrated on football until he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during his junior year.

Before his senior year, he underwent knee surgery, which prevented him from playing in the football season. He played collegiate baseball with the Ohio State Buckeyes while a student at Ohio State University.

He also participated in the Chillicothe Paints’ Prospect League summer baseball team. He played with the Orleans Firebirds during the summer collegiate baseball season of the Cape Cod Baseball League, and he was chosen as an all-star.

With the 62nd overall pick in the second round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, the Houston Astros selected Dawson. $1,056,800 was handed to him as a signing bonus when he joined the Astros.

On December 8, 2021, the Cincinnati Reds selected Dawson from the Astros organization in the Rule 5 draft’s minor league round.
