George Karlaftis was born on April 3, 2001. He is a Greek-born professional American football defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL).
Greece’s Athens is where Karlaftis was born. His father Mathiós “Matthew” Karlaftis was an all-around athlete growing up in Greece.
He later studied civil engineering at the University of Miami and then went on to Purdue University to receive a doctorate.
His mother Amy met Matthew when she was a freshman. Amy had grown up in West Lafayette, Indiana, not far from Purdue. They lived in Athens after getting married. The four children of the couple were raised in Greek culture, albeit Amy spoke English to them at home.
Karlaftis started each of Purdue’s 12 games as a true freshman in 2019, compiling 54 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Due to a positive COVID-19 result, he only participated in three games as a sophomore in 2020, concluding the season with four tackles and two sacks. Karlaftis declared for the 2022 NFL Draft after recording 4.5 sacks in the 2021 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Karlaftis in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 30th overall.
