At the high school in Iowa City, Iowa, he played football. From 2008 to 2012, he attended the University of Iowa after high school and played collegiate football there for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

During his time at the University, he received the second-team All-Big Ten honor. In May 2014, he was acquired by the Houston Texans.
