In Tullahoma, Tennessee, Sheffield attended Tullahoma High School. He needed Tommy John surgery, which prompted him to drop out of the Major League Baseball draft before he could graduate.

He was chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the thirteenth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, but he opted to enroll at Vanderbilt instead of signing a contract.

Sheffield played for Vanderbilt in 2015, making 6 starts and 16 relief appearances after missing the 2014 season to recover from surgery.

He would record a 5-2 win-loss record, a 2.85 ERA, with 55 strikeouts in 60 total innings. After the 2015 campaign, he participated in the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s summer collegiate baseball league.

The 2016 year saw Sheffield make 16 starts, compiling an 8-6 record, 3.01 ERA, and 113 strikeouts in 101+2/3 innings.
