Ellis started off his career while a student at Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana. Due to his skills and performances, he earned a lot of awards including, a two-time first-team all-District 2-4A selection, first-team all-state by the LSWA as a senior, and a two-time all-Northeast Louisiana selection by the Monroe News-Star.
Ellis was very creative and competitive in sports so he joined the school track and field. He competed in the shot put, where he finished third in the state as a junior, the javelin throw (with a top throw of 47.2 meters), and the discus throw, where he won the state title with a throw of 47.15 meters in 2009.

After his high school career, Ellis enrolled at Louisiana Tech University and played for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs from 2009 to 2013.
