McGowan was born in Dalton, Georgia, where he was raised, on November 1, 1999. He participated in track and field, football, and baseball while a student at Dalton High School.

He served as the football team’s captain as a senior and helped the squad win the Georgia 6-A State championship. He received first-team all-region and all-area honours and was named to the all-state honourable mention list.

After all athletes were granted an additional year of eligibility because to the COVID-19 epidemic, McGowan declared that he would transfer to Georgia Tech for a super senior season near the end of the 2020 season. He participated in 11 games, 10 of which he started, during his lone season at Georgia Tech.

He tied for the team lead with 37 receptions, was third on the team in receiving yards (467), and scored seven touchdowns. His eight-place conference finish and league-leading touchdown total for Georgia Tech. He received the academic all-conference honor at the year’s conclusion.
