Jefferson is one of the young linebackers with a promising future in the NFL. He was born and raised by Michael and Teresa Jefferson in Mesquite, Texas, and had his high school education at Poteet. Jefferson was an active young prospect, and he excelled in football, baseball, and track and field.

Jefferson played defensive back as a sophomore in 2012, and he had 105 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, and 4 blocked kicks. Jefferson was honored as the Sophomore of the Year in District 10–4A and was named to the first team of All-Area by the Dallas Morning News after he assisted Poteet in achieving a record of 11–3, including a district record of 5–2 and a spot in the UIL playoffs.

Poteet made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the 4A Division 2 tournament, however, they were eliminated by Daeshon Hall’s Lancaster by a score of 21–13. Jefferson spent most of his junior season playing linebacker and was a key member of a defense that limited nine opponents to fewer than 20 points.

He was selected as the Defensive MVP and was placed on the first team for All-District 10–4A after tallying 93 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Malik Jefferson attended the University of Texas at Austin and played college football for the Texas Longhorns.

Jefferson was a true freshman at Texas when he began his playing career, and he was honored as a Freshman All-American by both Sporting News and USA Today. During the 2015 season, Jefferson was also recognized as the Big 12 Conference’s Freshman Defensive Player of the Year
