When the 2013 season began, Garcia was sidelined with an injury and didn’t play until May 14th, after a brief rehab stint with Lakeland. However, he slashed just.241 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 30 games with Detroit.

In early July, he was sent down to the minors, where he discovered his swing with the Toledo Mud Hens. On July 30th, the Detroit Tigers moved Garcia to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team transaction that brought them SS Jose Iglesias from the Boston Red Sox.

He was hitting .382/.414/.549 in 32 games. With the White Sox, he batted.304/.327/.447 with four doubles, five home runs, and 21 RBI in 42 games.

As the Red Sox’s opening-day starter in 2014, he went 4 for 5 with his first two home runs of the season on April 8th against the Colorado Rockies, going 2-for-5 with a home run.

On the following day, though, he attempted to make a diving grab on a sinking liner hit by the Rockies’ D.J. LeMahieu and tore his labrum in his left shoulder.

He had to have surgery, and it appeared that his season was done, but he returned in mid-August and played 46 games, hitting .244 with seven home runs and 29 RBI.
