When he was in high school, Cody participated in baseball at Reservoir High School in Fulton, Maryland. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 32nd round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft after high school, but he declined to sign and instead decided to play collegiate baseball at the University of South Carolina.
In the seventh round of the 2018 MLB draft, the Cleveland Guardians selected him after he earned his degree from the university. The next year, he participated in over 21 games for the Lake County Captains and Lynchburg Hill Cats, making his professional debut.
