Freeland was active in a variety of sports as a kid, but his favourites were golf and baseball. Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Colorado, is where he obtained his high school diploma.

Freeland was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 35th round of the 2011 MLB amateur draft, but he chose to attend the University of Evansville in Indiana instead.

A 4.55 earned run average (ERA) and 70 strikeouts have been recorded by Freeland since joining Vanderbilt. For the New York Yankees, the right-hander pitched in 14 games as a sophomore in 2013, posting a 4–8 record, a 4.34 ERA, and an 84.1 K/9 rate in 93.1 innings of work.

During his first season in the Cape Cod League, he pitched for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and was named an All-Star after compiling an ERA of 2.25 and 48 strikeouts in 48 innings.

He went 10-2 with a 1.90 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 99+2/3 innings. After his junior year of high school, the Rockies drafted him in the first round.
